This post is inspired by several social media profiles, I have seen online. This list is not complete does not attempt to be one, I am merely writing down some of my observation with an added touch of humor, stereotypes and drama. I do not mean offense to anyone. Enjoy.
1. THE TRADITIONAL GIRL
She is the type of girl that might live in Addis Ababa, Nazret or perhaps even Hawassa. She has a modest job but she always has her photos taken professionally at Sami/Harar/Dani/Temesgen Photo Studio. She might even have photos in the traditional habesha dress and albasso hairstyle. She often uses the pseudonames of konjo, sweet, love, gual, or gurl on her Facebook profile names and often comments on other people’s photos saying ‘wowow’, ‘congraaa’ or ‘kkkkkk’. She shares a bunch of funny and adorable pictures of ferenj babies on her page and dreams of marrying rich.
2. THE ADDIS ABABA MOLQAQA
You can catch her driving around Bole in her silver Toyota Vitz or Yaris or relaxing at the 5 and 4 star hotels of Addis Ababa with her girlfriends. Most evenings she goes to Flirt, MK’s, Club Illusion or Black Rose and she is dying to get access to the new Jolly Bar Living Room. She attends multiple weddings and has tens of photos of herself as a bridesmaid online. She travels to Dubai and Thailand at least once a year and sports a fake Michael Kors bag. She wears heels no matter the weather and has human hair extensions. She might even speak in the oh so eloquent American Amharic accent, even though she was born and raised in Addis Ababa. She dreams of finding her a rich husband and moving to the United States of DC.
3. THE FASHIONISTA JETSETTER
She is a rare breed. She usually is based in DC but spends an equal amount time of the year in Addis Ababa or Dubai. She is the envy of all the Addis Ababa molqaqas as when she arrives to in Addis once a year, she is the talk of the town. She wears designer handbags and Zara dresses and high heels that top all the molqaqas shoe collection. Nobody really knows what she does for a living but she sure is konjo and the ultimate selfie queen!
Well this girl lives in DC, London or perhaps Stockholm. She works her behind off in her respective country in a modest job at hotel, hospital, or supermarket and saves money rigorously. She is only going out for an occasional hookah or Teddy Afro/Jacky Gosee concert, where most of her online photos are taken. She shops in H&M and Forever 21 and sports trendy outfits, but lives in a modest apartment in the cheaper areas of the town. She spends usually one month in Addis every year and dreams of setting up a fashion boutique in Addis to service all the molqaqas with the latest perfume, clothes and heels from her country.
5. THE SUPERMODEL
A very rare breed, very few manage to get to this status, but once they do, you can spot them on the covers of Vogue, Elle or H&M commercials.
All hail queen Liya, Maya and Gelila!
